Jan Mirikitani leads the class in group discussions on course learning objectives on Supervisors being committed to their department’s mission towards developing their subordinates towards Officer safety, public safety, & adherence to SOPs. You will discuss multiple forms of leadership & when each is relevant to teambuilding & morale. First-line supervisors come from the ranks but must now support department & community goals bigger than friendships with fellow Officers.

- The importance of Sergeant consistency
- Sergeants should lead ethical policing practices, building morale, & customer service

- Delegating work to fairly develop subordinates towards succession
- Report proofing & editing subordinate narratives
- Leadership thinking cores for decision-making, de-briefing, & coaching
- Leadership’s duty in disallowing sexual & workplace harassment & discrimination
- Managing difficult employees & their negative impact if left unchecked
- Knowing your department policy on the Sergeant’s role in progressive discipline
- Group practice with problem-solving scenarios
