This four (4) hour training has been designed with the purpose of addressing the issue of pregnant inmates who are incarcerated in Illinois jails and prisons. Through ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) advocacy and litigation, some differences are mandated when providing custodial care for pregnant inmates in Illinois and across the country. The emergency civil rights lawsuit was filed on behalf of women’s constitutional rights while pregnant and in custody. There is an increase throughout the country of pregnant inmates in jails and prisons. The United States has the largest population of incarcerated women in the world, with approximately 112,000 women in federal or state prisons and another 110,000 in jails. There is a call for gender-responsive policies and programs in custodial settings, including the development and implementation of programs that meet the unique needs of pregnant women.
